When making ATS panels, we often use,
1.) Contactors
2.) Circuit Breakers
Many photos posted on social media of ATS panels ,most of them had made ATS panels with contactors.
ATS – Automatic Transfer Switch is used to transfer electrical power between utility power and gen power. Here, the ATS switch automatically transfers electrical power when one of the power sources is disconnected.
We know that all these panel board wiring should be done according to IEC standards.
The standard used for ATS is IEC 60947-6-1.
This standard can only be applied to an ATS switch, that is, an ATS switch manufactured and released to the market by a certain manufacturer.
Then we have a question,
How do contactors and circuit breakers become ATS switches?
Because there are separate IEC standards for contactors and circuit breakers.
⚠️️Contactors – IEC 60947-1
⚠️️Circuit breakers – IEC 60947 – 2
In fact, in these cases, the ATS switch is created by us ourselves.
2 contactors are interlocked or two MCCBs are interlocked with a motor unit. Is this a correct ATS switch? Is this a switch tested by the manufacturer? No. This is made by us. In our work shop.
But a Motorized Changeover can be used as an ATS switch.
Surely our friends have used this method too. Shall we talk about the advantages and disadvantages of these three types of ATS?
1.) How do you operate the ATS manually when a contactor burns out in an ATS made of contactors?
2.) If the cable interlock is loose, the ATS will not work properly.
3.) If the ATS fails in a production area, how do you repair the ATS without breaking down the factory?
If your ATS is a motorized changeover, these problems can be easily solved. Because the manual mode comes in the switch. If the motor is damaged at any time, you can run the factory as a manual changeover switch. You have time to take your time and fix the problem.
