Sizing and calculating IT equipment load involves several steps:-
1. Determine the power density: Calculate the power density (W/sq ft) based on the IT room’s equipment and layout.
2. Calculate the total IT load: Sum up the power requirements of all IT equipment (servers, storage, network devices).
3. Add support infrastructure load: Include power requirements for cooling, lighting, and other support systems.
4. Consider redundancy and backup power: Factor in the power requirements for redundant systems and backup power sources (e.g., UPS, generators).
5. Calculate the total IT load: Sum up the IT load, support infrastructure load, and redundancy/backup power load.
6. Apply a diversity factor: Reduce the total load by a diversity factor (e.g., 0.7) to account for uneven power usage.
7. Calculate the UPS capacity: Size the UPS based on the total load and desired backup time.
8. Calculate the generator capacity: Size the generator based on the total load and desired backup time.
Load calculation formula:- Total IT equipment Load (kW) = (IT Load + Support Infrastructure Load + Redundancy/Backup Power Load) x Diversity Factor
Example:IT Load = 500 kW
Support Infrastructure Load = 200 kW
Redundancy/Backup Power Load = 150 kWDiversity Factor = 0.7
Total IT equipment Load = (500 + 200 + 150) x 0.7 = 630 kW
